RE: Ferry service between Skagway & Haines

Depending on the ferry used you may have to back on and then execute a right angle turn inside, backing through it. They have people, I think two to a rig, to assist you with this. They are really good and probably guide you throught it better than you could possibly do it by yourself. When we put our TC on the ferry, they kept saying "look at me, not your mirror." Piece of cake realizing that a TC is not a trailer.

RE: I do not know if i can go camping after my wife passed away

Hasn't happened to me but it did to a close friend. We persuaded him to buy a trailer (he'd never RV'd before) and go to AZ for the winter with us. When we left he was SO LOW. Had he not gone I think he'd have just sat in the house doing not much of anything but grieving. Everyone grieves in his/her own way, but I don't think what he was doing before we left was healthy. He went, enjoyed himself, grieved in the company of friends of many years (I met him in 6th grade in 1947). He has remarried, is happy, he & his new wife are avid RVers now and snowbird in Yuma.

RE: Can I go down the road with the furnace on?

We always do it when temps make it desireable. Keeps things from freezing and keeps us from having to climb into a frigid bed.

RE: First Christmas away, need advice

We always have Christmas with the family on New Years. Before, we'd leave for AZ snowbirding after that. This year we're going to AZ leaving Nov 21. On about Dec 29 we're going to jump on the Amtrak and take it back to Indianapolis where the family Christmas takes place. That way, grandma gets Christmas with the kiddies and I get to leave MI before too much snow & cold come along. Round trip will run a little over $800, much cheaper than driving. We could fly cheaper yet but DW doesn't like to fly and I like to see things when I look out the window. Seems this solution will keep everybody happy.

RE: how cold is to cold

From high school science water changes temperature more slowly than most of its surroundings. It would make no difference in your water tank, no matter how much or little is in it. Depending on how long it stays at 25 degrees it might matter about any water in your lines. Won't matter about your holding tanks.

RE: Propane vs Electric

Last winter in AZ's Verde Valley we were using a 30 lb tank of propane every 7-9 days. The furnace would run at night and in the morning until the sun came up. Because the furnace was so noisy we'd turn it off in the evening while watching tv. Then we'd use electric. The fridge runs on AC, the water heater on propane. The furnace did not run during the day. With that kind of propane useage we were spending between $80-$90 per month for propane. At home we both heat and cool with a groundwater heat pump which makes our house COMPLETELY electric. So heat, ac,cooking, heating water, washing & drying clothes, lights, running our well pump, and everything else electric, we pay $137 per month for electricity. Our house is much larger than our trailer. It's also better insulated than the trailer and we do get a lower electric rate for having an all electric house. For whatever all the above is worth but $80+ per month (propane) plus electric for the trailer seems an awful lot compared to $137 for the house.

It's hard to find a 4x2 in Michigan.

RE: 36' or 40'

If you think 40' is too big, it is. If you think 36' is too small, it is. You're the only one who can decide what's right for you.

RE: If Ford, GM, and Chrysler were to go out of business.....

Over the past 100+ years there has been a multitude of U.S. automakers go out of business. The most recent were Studebaker/Packard, Hudson/Nash, and American Motors. None of those made much of a splash when they died because their market share was so small. Probably that's why they went to the big junkyard in the sky.

RE: Thumb Joint replacement

Way back in the mid 1960s a doctor Albert (or Alfred) Swanson from Grand Rapids, MI was doing finger joint replacements. Don't know about thumbs. Word then was that he was a pioneer in finger joint replacement. Could try a google

RE: Careful of Oil Change Shops....

I live in Michigan and winter in Arizona. Needed an oil change out there so I went to a NAPA place. Got oil, filter, fuel filter, air filter and was charged about $230. Included was a $55 air filter that costs less than $25 at Walmart. If I had had all this done at my home dealer it would have been a little over half. Went for an oil change at an AZ Dodge dealer for only an oil change and filter. Took about 2.5 hours because they did a "vehicle check" list No charge but SO LONG! Same place once, under warranty, took care of a transmission fluid leak but didn't check the fluid level afterwards. When the truck later (but not much) decided it was reluctant to move, I took it to another place and the issue was resolved. Stupidity at the Dodge dealer, greed at the NAPA.

RE: Cleaning Corian countertops....Bachelor needs help.

The manufacturers of those products usually have a product designed especially for that material. Check with a countertop dealer.

RE: TT or 5th Wheel

If you're not going to move it, look at floor plans in both, find one you like in either 5er or TT and buy the one that you get the best deal on. Typically TTs cost less than 5ers.

RE: TT or 5th Wheel

We've had two 5ers, went back to a TT because we wanted the truck bed covered. For me, it's easier to back up the TT. Others say the 5er is easier to back up. Personal preference.

RE: Natchez Trace National Parkway

Great drive, especially in the spring when things are blooming. There are three free campgrounds on the TRACE. No hookups but hard to beat the price.
